Avoiding Temptation As a Young Elder
by TMS init was the summer of '72.
i was 24 but had been the presiding overseer or congregation servant of a small congregation in the county seat of an arkansas county for about 3 years.. my regular pioneer wife of nearly four years was big and pregnant, with our attempts at birth control unsuccessful.. one of my wife's several bible studies was with a young woman named brenda whom my wife had encountered in door to door work.. brenda had two young children she could barely handle and was married to a very countryfied arkie named henry who worked as a chicken catcher, one of the most difficult jobs at the local chicken plant.. brenda eventually revealed that she'd been raised as a jw, but was never baptized, having left home to marry henry at age 14. she spoke of her family in texas, mentioning her mother and two older sisters, all jws she said.. one morning, just before the meeting for field service, we noticed a small car in kingdom hall parking lot.
my wife and i were parked to one side of the hall in our aluminum nashua house trailer.. two young women got out of the car and soon joined us for the meeting for service, identifying themselves as brenda's sisters from texas.. the two girls, ages 17 and 20, were distractingly beautiful, with the eldest decked out like a magnificent southern belle including hat and heels, her high-end clothing accentuating her very obvious curves.. with no one else showing up for field service, it ended up just the four of us in the car group with the two texas girls in the back seat.. starting our time at a not-at-home, the 20 year old asked if she could accompany me to "hear my presentation.

“But what made it easy for me to resist was imagining the aftermath. I have a vivid imagination, and I could see every detail of how my life would turn into a living nightmare: the guilt, the tension between my wife and me, the uncomfortable conversations until I revealed what happened, and then my wife crying. That's where my imagination always stopped—my wife crying about something like that. An absolute, unbearable nightmare.“
if you have ever seen the movie by the Farelly Brothers “Hall Pass”, there is a scene almost exactly like this, where a married man is asked by the attractive teen-aged baby-sitter if he could buy some beer.
His mind immediately races through all the scenarios: caught at the lake with her by the police, arrested for buying alcohol for a minor, jail, loss of job, divorce, being raped in prison…
When he gently tries to tell her that “While finds her attractive” etc., she recoils in disgust, because she really had in mind buying it for her and HER boyfriend, and EWWW!!!
but I have often had the same imagination when it came to temptation in my life. A good active imagination can be a lifesaver!

The “Good Provider”
by Captain Schmideo2 inanyone besides my mom ever use this term for describing their husband, especially one that was not a “spiritual lead” in the family?.
this sounds like a term to use instead of the more truthful “i don’t really love him anymore, he is a disappointment to me, but as long as he brings in the money to pay the bills and puts food on the table for my children, i guess i will put up with it.”.
thoughts?.

It is now 2024. I am going to be 60 years old in a few months. 60. Six-Zero. Over half a century.
My mom died two months after her 80th birthday last year, after suffering for years of chronic poor health (some of it brought on by a very sedentary lifestyle, but also plagued by emotional and mental issues and family drama which did not help overall.) And yes, I wept. I wept because there was unfinished business between her and I, things I wish I had told her.
If I live to 80, that means that I have just about 20 years left in me. That's a very sobering thought, considering how fast the past 20 years flew by.So, I have a lot of peers that I grew up with, with parents in the same age group as mine. And they are watching in confusion and pain as, one by one, these parents are dying off.
The refrain I keep hearing is "this wasn't supposed to be like this; this wasn't supposed to happen!", also followed by the realizaiton that "we" are now becoming the "elderly ones", and that clock is ticking hard.
Back in 1995, (when I was 40), thanks to the early days of the internet, I finally realized that this whole thing was bogus, and I made the decision I was no longer going to wait for a bus that was never going to arrive. So, heartless as it sounds, my mom's death, while sad, did not "shake me to the core" as it did my sister and my brother, who keep on believing.
In the space of 5 years, my wife has seen her aunt and her father pass, and with me, it's my mom and, last month, my aunt on my mom's side.
It's only going to "accelerate", because, much as we would like, no one lives forever. Once you make peace with that, it's a little less (a little less) traumatic when parents pass away. But, if you are still in wide-eyed belief that "This system just CAN'T last much longer" (the sister who told me that died within five years of that statement, and its been 7 years since her death, no new system yet...), unprepared mentally for this eventuality, then I am sure the wave of deaths that are coming is going to be a real shock to deal with.
Also, the amount of unpreparedness, with both financial and legal documents, just amazes me. My mom was better prepared than most, but there was still a lot of expensive headaches in settling her estate. In the case of my father in Law (who was not a Witness), he left a big mess that my wife's family had to straighten out, and my mother-in-law, True-Believer to the core who cared not one whit about "worldly things" like finances, got a real education in such things after her husband died. After my mom's passing, I finally got off my arse and got wills and a trust set up for me and my wife, because I don't want my kids do deal with the same crap I had to. I have been on my Dad about this as well, but, his attitude is "que sera, sera", which means I am going to have to step up for the funeral expenses when he passes. And even the "cheapest" burial is amazingly expensive where I liive. I can only imagine what other JW families must go through when this happens, since so many of them did not really put aside much for retirement or for death.
Anyway, another funeral tomorrow for the father of someone from my peer group, and she just lost her husband (younger than me!) due to a massive heart attack. I am sure she is just reeling by now (another pioneer wife/super-elder husband power couple. Still didn't provide immunity...).
Anyway, it's been a wild ride these past few years. And it's only beginning... -

"Such is life"
It's funny you quote from the book of Job, considering that his so-called friends gave him no comfort at all.
Like your post, which you managed to turn the subject back to your own loss. Well done! -

"The reception seems to be the draw because ALL witnesses crave a party."
There WAS a reception, but it was family members and invitees (and that was exactly 1) only.
If the rest of that lot thought they were going to get free sandwiches and punch from me, they were sadly mistaken.
The one person that reached out to me for spiritual solace and comfort was the Resident Minister of the hospital.
Such a worthless, dead religion. -

Someone else posted something a similar experience, this is one I had regarding my mom.
My mom died last year. She had been in failing health for years, but the last 2 year were pretty rough for her, with lots of visits to the hospital. The last 4 months, it was the hospital, a skilled nursing facility/rehab unit, and finally, a nursing home. She was home-bound for years, with her only trips out being doctor visits. I was the one who had to drive her to those appointments. It took all her energy to do these short trips, and she could not go anywhere without oxygen, so going to the hall would have been a production that she would not be able to physically do. Her interaction with the hall, such as it was, was on Zoom.
She was so dediicated to that rotten religion, but they let her down in the end. When she was in the hospital in her final weeks, and I made it known through the grapevine of people I keep in touch with at her hall that she was sick, no one came to visit her, except for a couple of Witnesses who did not know her personally, but were there as part of their "hospital rounds".
When she was sick at home, she never got calls from her so-called friends, checking on her welfare. She got one of those generic "letters of encouragement" from one of her contemporaries around memorial time a couple of years back, and she was so desperate for contact, she actually believed that they were really concerned and wanting to re-establish a friendship, but it was pretty apparent to me by the reactions she got when she called this "friend" that there wasn't going to be a lot of hanging out together.
So, she died. The remembrance service was at the funeral home that she had prepaid years in advance, so I didn't have to go through the awkwardness of trying to get a Kingdom Hall service (in fact, if it had been up to just me, I wouldn't have bothered with having a JW funeral at all. But, I had to keep my JW sister happy, so...) At ther funeral, NOW all of her contemporaries show up. "Why, I didn't even *know* she was sick!", etc. etc. Yeah, you didn't know, because when was the last effing time you reached out to her? I wanted to kick some people in kneecaps, I was so disgusted with them. They won't show up when you are alive, but they show up to put on the big pretense of concern at the funeral service.
Anyway, I am sure my story is not unique. Once a member of the hall stops showing up due to serious illness, unless they are part of some huge clan (we are not a huge clan in my family), then they are going to be forgotten.
After that rotten show, we had a graveside service for just family members only. I felt much more satisfied with that experience, because we could talk about her life, and our personal remembrances, and it felt more loving and "Christian" with her "worldly" family that it did with that other bunch.
Anyway, thanks for reading.
